Assignments for Media Convergence Class at USF

Check out some of the assignments that I have done for my media convergence class. This is one of four classes I'm taking currently in the semester unit at the University of South Florida in St. Petersburg. So far I have done projects related to the St. Petersburg Pier, the Tavern on the Green and the fitness center. These projects were produced across many different mediums from sound slides to JayCut film editor. Check them out and please comment. More and hopefully better ones will be going up later.

Feel the Workout Burn at the USF St. Pete Gym!!

The Gym at the University of South Florida in St. Petersburg, a place for students young and old to stretch their leg and arm muscles and stay in shape. The gym offers a variety of cardio and weight equipment that any student can use.

The gym is open Monday through Thursday from 7 am to 10 pm. The most popular time for people to come into the gym to workout is in the morning and afternoon. Those are the times of the day when people are either going to work or class.

Most students when they come to the gym use it as a place to get in shape and relive stress. There are many ways people keep their minds focused while at the gym. Many of them will have music or will watch television on the screens provided. Many will also bring their books to study for tests while on the elliptical machines and treadmills.

Some of the many machines and weights inside allow beginner to advanced workouts. Many of the employees that work in the gym are also active trainers. They have been known to help out a beginner with all the things they would need to get started.

When people come to the gym, they usually are working out a particular section of their body on a certain day. Many people will do cardio work on one day, chest and abs on another day finally legs and arms on the last day. Many times when people go to the gym they will do multiple repetitions of weight in order to get used to the stress they are putting on their muscles.

In addition to the weights and machines, many fun aerobic classes are also offered to allow people a different kind of workout. Some of the most common classes that people have taken are Zumba, Yoga, karate, and other self defense courses . A Zumba class is a type of dance that exercises many different muscles of the body and burns off a great deal of calories.

Many students enjoy going to the gym with either a partner or a close friend. They serve as either a spotter or a spectator. Most of the time, they are used for safety reasons so that way people will not get hurt when they use the machines.

Since it has undergone a new renovation, more people have to come to the gym to try the new elliptical machines and treadmills. In fact, the most common people to use them now are the elderly and people trying to study with their books.

Cheers from the Tavern on the Green!

The Tavern on the Green at the University of South Florida St. Petersburg is a college landmark; a place where young and old eager minds can go before and after class. Here they can have a social atmosphere and feel apart of a great community.

The Tavern has been around for more than 20 years and has offered a variety of drinks, food and entertainment. Some of the many people that you will see hanging around the tavern are students, residents of St. Petersburg, pilots, dog walkers and yes even professors.

The most common drink that is served at the Tavern is beer and wine. The most common beer that is served at the Tavern is Miller Lite off the tap. Other common tap drinks served as well are Yeungling, Guinness, Shock Top, and Blue Moon. The Tavern will sometimes have specialty beers they serve every month in order to have a variety and change for the customers. The average price for at beer is around two dollars and a whole pitcher is eight dollars.

The most common meal to have there is the half sandwich special. This special has the sandwich of the day along with a pickle to add to the side. Many people will even add a side of chili or soup to complete the order. When looking at the menu at the tavern many people will notice that the sandwiches are named after famous authors and story titles. Some of these sandwiches include the Hemmingway, Tennessee Williams, the Lawrence of Arabia and the Randal. The original owner of the tavern wanted to have a college feel put into the menu. If you give the sandwich a name, it gives the meal a little personality.

Although the tavern’s indoor space is small, most students and faculty enjoy sitting outside on the wooden picnic benches and patio chairs. Many of the students consider this to be a calming atmosphere that is not so loud and they can freely socialize with other people.

Many clubs and organizations have made the Tavern their meeting place to discuss club policies and hang and chat with their members. Many members of student government and the cycling club have made it their hangout after meetings or functions are done.

In addition to the drinks and food, there is also a great amount of entertainment that comes to perform at the Tavern. Many times, local independent rock bands will come to play a gig at the tavern on its wooden patio area. Every Wednesday night at 7 o clock, the tavern puts on a Rock the Mic night. This allows local performers, standup artists and spoken word performers to express themselves and flex their creative muscles.

In addition to the tavern is an adjacent coffee shop known as the Campus Grind. Opened in 2010, the Grind serves up blended coffees, espressos and bakery goods not sold in the tavern. This coffee house serves predominately breakfast foods and would like to be better known then its campus rival, Starbucks. The two businesses consider each other to be good neighbors and they welcome students to sit in their lounge areas and socialize.

Although the tavern has undergone many changes to its inside and out, the current owner says he would like expand the wooden patio and add more in the near future. Expect the Tavern to have a bigger patio area and more televisions to watch either an intense soccer or football game.
