There are new recommendations for mammograms. There was a segment this morning on Good Morning America and a front page article in the St. Petersburg Times. I haven't seen an article yet that has included interviews with non-experts.
Al's Morning Meeting suggested the story this morning as one that would be easy to localize (I tend to agree that the story could be turned around quickly with interviews from survivors, women near the former recommended age to begin mammograms, etc.):
"New guidelines issued by a Dept. of Health and Human Services panel say women do not need to get annual mammograms until age 50. Until now, women have been told to get a mammogram every year beginning with their 40th birthday.
The new recommendations, based on commissioned studies, say mammograms are not terribly reliable for younger women unless they have a family history of breast cancer."
